World Poker Tour set to make its return to Cambodia

January 12, 2024 Cambodia Events & Announcements

For the third year in a row, the World Poker Tour (WPT) is coming back to Cambodia, this time as part of the Main Tour.

Starting on January 25 at NagaWorld in Phnom Penh, the $3,500 buy-in poker extravaganza will culminate in the highly sought-after admission of a player into the esteemed WPT Champions Club. Now, the WPT Main Tour will make its first visits outside of the US and Australia with this relocation.

Following the WPTDeepStacks tournament’s November 2019 success, the notion to utilize Cambodia as a poker destination was first conceived. Regretfully, the global disruptions brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic forced a delay in the preparations. The competition will have an international character because to the notable prohibition of local players from participating.

“That’s what makes the poker festival in Cambodia fascinating because there is no dominant country represented,” said WPT Live Events Specialist Danny McDonagh, emphasizing the uniqueness of the event. Singapore had a 13% share in the 2019 WPTDeepStacks tournament, the most of any country before the outbreak. Along with long-distance powers like Australia, the United States, and the United Kingdom, the WPT has seen substantial participation in recent years from nations like Korea, Vietnam, and India.

The WPT is committed to bringing world-class poker tournaments to diverse and intriguing locations across the world, and this Cambodia leg is anticipated to be the biggest buy-in event since the days of major tournament poker in Macau.
