Crown Melbourne implements new rules to address gambling-related harm, enhance consumer protection

December 15, 2023 Asia iGaming & Gambling

As of Thursday, Crown Melbourne’s new mandatory pre-commitment laws force all gaming patrons to set time and loss limits before to using electronic gambling machines.

These steps aim to lessen the harm caused by gaming and enhance consumer protection, and they are based on the conclusions of the Finkelstein Royal Commission, which looked at Victoria’s casino license.

Depending on their chosen restriction, customers who are over their pre-established limits will not be allowed to use the gaming machines at Crown Melbourne for a period of either 24 hours or 7 days.

When clients register for a membership card, Crown will authenticate their identities. This membership card will be linked to a YourPlay account, which will provide them access to detailed activity reports and real-time information on their play.

The government claims that these changes build on earlier measures that required customers to take 15-minute breaks after three hours of continuous gambling and to take a day’s break after 12 hours of gaming in a 24-hour period, with a 36-hour weekly gambling restriction.

Although mandatory carded play is now limited to electronic gaming machines (EGMs), by December 2025, all casino table games are expected to be subject to the legislation. Moreover, AU$1,000 cash winnings is the cap on new money laundering regulations; any amounts beyond this amount may only be paid via check or electronic transfer.

Melissa Horne, the Minister for Casino, Gaming, and Liquor Regulation, emphasized that the goals of these policies are to protect vulnerable individuals from the negative effects of gaming and to stop illegal activities like money laundering. Ciarán Carruthers, CEO of Crown Resorts, reaffirmed the company’s dedication to operating the safest casinos in the world and praised the introduction of carded play as a ground-breaking move that enhances transparency and enables patrons to more effectively control their limits.
