Asian Poker Tour cancels Vietnam poker series amid alleged violation of local gambling laws
Due to concerns that the competition went beyond the laws governing gambling in the area, the Asian Poker Tour (APT) postponed the last two days of the APT Hanoi Billions in Vietnam.
APT’s social media pages announced the decision, claiming “extenuating circumstances” that they were unable to resolve.
Authorities reportedly looked for the proprietors and associates of APT’s local partner, VSOP Entertainment Company, at the National Convention Center in Hanoi.
Although the details of the visit are unknown, the police seemed to have warned them that they would come back the next day. Despite formal approval from the Hanoi Department of Culture and Sports, VSOP Entertainment Company allegedly conducted bridge and poker tournaments without full permission, according to a citizen complaint filed with the Hanoi People’s Committee.
Additional questions were raised about the tournament’s relationship to Natural8, an online poker business that was named as an event sponsor and sponsored internet satellites to the competition. The Asian affiliate of GG Poker, Natural8, is not a recognized entity in Vietnam. The APT reportedly made an effort to resolve objections throughout the week by removing Natural8 signage from the location and altering the event format.
APT emphasized that staffers were still on the ground and that the suspension was caused in part by concerns about the safety of staff and players if the series had progressed. Allegations had surfaced that APT personnel had left Vietnam after the police inspection. Full reimbursements are expected for players who paid entry prices or participated.
