Sands China to revitalize Iec Long Firecracker Factory

Macau casino operator Sands China Ltd is working with the government to improve the former site of the Iec Long Firecracker Factory in Taipa and two streets in central Macau. Part of the site of the 1925 plant, which had been closed since 1984, was renovated by the government in the previous year and is scheduled to reopen to the public in late 2022.

The factory’s history will be included in an augmented reality (AR) experience that Sands China aims to roll out alongside new dining and drinking establishments. The augmented reality project is now in the planning stages, with a release date set for the first half of 2019.

In addition, Sands China will embellish the Taipa Houses neighbourhood near the former firecracker plant with sculptures, paintings, and other works of art. Performance series at Taipa Houses and the Cultural Centre of Macau are another target.

In addition, the firm will upgrade the infrastructure of the Rua das Estalagens in downtown Macau, providing incentives for local start-ups to set up shop there, and revitalising the Patio da Eterna Felicidade by erecting art galleries there.

Among the terms of the 10-year concessions awarded to the six casino operators in January was the promotion of “community tourism” in Macau’s older neighbourhoods.

MGM China Holdings Ltd is helping to revitalise the Barra area of Macau, Wynn Macau Ltd is aiding in the pedestrianisation of Rua da Felicidade, Melco Resorts & Entertainment Ltd is creating tourism and leisure elements at waterfront sites, SJM Holdings Ltd is restoring historic structures on Avenida Almeida Ribeiro, and Galaxy Entertainment Group Ltd is working to revive the Lai Chi Vun Shipyards in Coloane.
