Macau to revitalize six old districts

September 13, 2023 Macau Industry Updates

Together with the city’s six concessionaires, the Macau government has announced plans to improve six old districts. The goal of this project is to improve Macau’s cultural icons and make new ones. Ms. Ao Ieong U, who is the Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture, told the press about the revitalization projects at a press meeting. She also talked about how the government and concessionaires worked together to make these plans.

These are the six areas picked for revitalization:

1. Lai Chi Vun Shipyard
2. Rua da Felicidade
3. The A-Ma area
4. Inner Harbour Piers 23 and 25
5. Avenida do Almeida Ribeiro and Rua de Cinco de Outubro
6. Iec Long Firecracker Factory

A part of Lai Chi Vun Shipyard’s renovation is already done and open to the public. Galaxy Entertainment Group is in charge of this project. Wynn Macau is in charge of the Rua da Felicidade area, which is going to turn into a public street and should be ready for the Mid-Autumn Festival.

MGM China will be in charge of making the A-Ma area look better. SJM said that it wanted to improve the Inner Harbour Pier area for the last three districts. Also, Sands China is likely to decide to improve an area near Rua do Cunha in Taipa.

These plans are part of Macau’s attempts to protect and improve its cultural assets while also boosting tourism. Macau’s Chief Executive, Ho Iat Seng, said before that the government had gotten plans for revitalizing these old areas from the six concessionaires. Since then, most of the plans have been made public. The government and concessionaires are working together to bring new life to these old places and make them more appealing to both locals and tourists.
