Macau, Melco to revitalize Inner Harbour piers, surrounding areas

September 22, 2023 Macau Industry Updates

The Monte Fortress of St. Paul and its surrounding region, as well as Inner Harbour Piers 23 and 25, will all be revitalized, according to a proposal revealed by the Macau government and Melco Resorts and Entertainment Ltd. Six sites in Macau have been identified by different concessionaires as needing rejuvenation as part of a larger effort to do so.

The revival plan was presented by Melco’s Director of Innovation and Public Relations, Jennifer Lai, and is titled “Conservation, Revitalization, Coexistence.” The Inner Harbour’s Nos. 23 and 25, two historic structures constructed in 1948 and 1950, will be the main emphasis. Melco wants to convert these structures into a multifaceted center for culture and tourism.

According to the plan, there will be an inner harbor bazaar, gift and souvenir shops, a visitor center, bookstores and cafes with sea views, space for cultural and creative businesses, a private rooftop area, and an Instagrammable photo platform.

Melco will work with the government in the short to medium term to improve operations at the Monte Fortress of St. Paul and its environs, encouraging artistic and cultural initiatives and aiding SMEs via cooperative projects. Additionally, Melco and the Cultural Affairs Bureau will collaborate to plan the “2023 Fortress Mid-Autumn Festival Activity” during the Mid-Autumn Festival, which will include illumination displays and regional performances.

Lawrence Ho, Chairman and CEO of Melco, emphasized the commitment of the firm to aiding the government in reviving this historic area. Through the redevelopment plan, the project, which is seen as a long-term undertaking, seeks to link numerous attractions in the area.

The Lai Chi Vun Shipyard (supported by Galaxy Entertainment), Rua da Felicidade (supported by Wynn), the A-Ma neighborhood (supported by MGM), Avenida do Almeida Ribeiro, Rua de Cinco de Outubro (supported by SJM), and the Iec Long Firecracker Factory (expected to be supported by Sands China) were among the six areas the Macau government had previously identified for revitalization.
