Thai Cabinet Assigns Finance Ministry to Review Casino Complex Report

April 17, 2024 Thailand iGaming & Gambling

The Thai Cabinet made a crucial decision when it assigned the Finance Ministry the responsibility of overseeing the assessment of a report on planned entertainment complexes, which includes casinos, in the nation.

The Nation Thailand reports that the study will be reviewed in 30 days by the Finance Ministry and a group of sixteen organizations, after which recommendations will be presented to the Cabinet.

To solve this urgent issue, a large coalition of ministries—including Tourism and Sports, Social Development and Human Security, and others—will collaborate with vital organizations like the Office of the Council of State and the Royal Thai Police.

On April 9, at a recent cabinet meeting, the full report of the House committee was formally adopted. It delves further into the possible benefits and drawbacks of building amusement centers in Thailand.

At least THB 100 billion ($2.73 billion) would be spent on each of the proposed complexes, which will contain casinos, hotels, shopping centers, concert halls, and theme parks.

The House committee’s leader, Deputy Finance Minister Julapun Amornvivat, highlighted the anticipated advantages of these complexes, which include the creation of jobs, the improvement of tourism, and the decrease in illicit gaming. Between THB 40 billion ($1.1 billion) and THB 50 billion ($1.4 billion) in annual revenues are anticipated.

Additionally, a study submitted to the Thai government emphasizes the possible financial gains from allowing casinos in these buildings. It anticipates a significant increase in average visitor expenditure as well as a significant increase in tourism revenue, which might exceed $12 billion.

The Prime Minister will chair a policy-level committee that will oversee the project’s execution if it is approved, according to plans highlighted by Deputy Finance Minister Amornvivat.

Moreover, a high-level committee made up of ministers and business executives would carefully review each aspect of the proposed program.
