Macau Braces for Record Border Crossings During Labor Day Holiday
With estimates indicating an amazing average of 680,000 border crossings every day, Macau authorities are bracing for a surge of tourists for the upcoming Labor Day holiday.
A Public Security Police representative said that between May 2 and 3, peak traffic is expected, with some 700,000 people crossing the border every day.
The bulk of the surge is anticipated to be borne by the Macau Border Gate, Qingmao Port, and Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge Port.
The Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO) predicts that more than 130,000 tourists will come daily, breaking previous records for the holiday season.
The government of Macau has promised to send out additional back-office staff to assist with front-line operations in advance.
To ease traffic congestion and expedite customs clearance, more inspection counters and lanes could be added.
As much as ninety percent of hotels on the Cotai Strip are already booked for the Labor Day holiday, according to Andy Wu, president of the Macau Tourism Industry Association.
