April 30, 2024 Macau Industry Updates

According to the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC), Macau’s hotel business recorded soaring occupancy rates in the first quarter of 2024, up 9.9 percentage points year over year to 84.8 percent. This was a dynamic display of progress.

The number of available guest rooms increased by 19.6% to 47,000 by the end of Q1 of this year thanks to the addition of 15 new hotels to Macau in the previous year.

All hotels in Macau welcomed 3,779,000 guests in 1Q24, a remarkable 39.7% increase from the same period the year before and an 8.4% increase over the same period in 2019. The number of tourists to the region is still high.

Despite this increase, visitors’ average length of stay remains stable at 1.7 nights per year, up 0.2 nights from the first quarter of 2019.

Remarkably, in the first quarter of the year, 482,000 guests arrived on package trips—a 329.9% year-over-year rise. A remarkable 118.2 percent surge in package trip arrivals occurred in March alone, bringing in 208,000 visitors.

Six hotels are now under construction, and 3,021 more hotel rooms are expected to be added to the city, according to the Macau Land and Urban Development Bureau.

In addition, Macau is steadfastly committed to satisfying its growing tourism demand as seen by the plans for seven additional hotels, totaling 851 hotel rooms.
