Indonesian Government Reports Citizens Engage in Online Gambling

Given that some 3.2 million Indonesians routinely engage in various forms of online gambling, the country’s gaming industry faces significant challenges.

Unsettling data from the Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Center (PPATK) showed that an astounding 80% of these people wager less than Rp100,000.

A startling discovery has revealed that the total revenue generated by illicit gambling activities might reach an astounding Rp327 trillion by 2023, highlighting the scope of the issue and its potential to have a negative socioeconomic impact.

The Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs, Hadi Tjahjanto, attributed the rise in online gambling to the wide range of online slots that are available, most of which are facilitated by mobile devices.

There was a noticeable change in Tjahjanto’s gambling habits, with a greater inclination towards slots as opposed to conventional credit and cash markets.

Indonesia’s Minister of Communication and Informatics, Budie Arie Setiadi, has announced the creation of a dedicated task force to address the concerning trend of online gambling.

Setiadi’s initiative exemplifies the government’s aggressive stance against the growth of illicit gambling and defense of locals’ rights.
