BlueBet Faces Fine for Current Roadside Gambling Ad Violation

April 16, 2024 World Crime & LegaliGaming & Gambling

Australian bookmaker BlueBet is facing a large fine from Victorian state authorities totaling AU$50,000 ($32,400) for violating laws pertaining to gambling advertising. Of particular, there have been 43 claims of posting such signs on or above public roads.

The Victorian Gambling and Casino Control Commission (VGCCC) levied the fine in response to advertisements that were viewed in late August and early September of 2022.

The VGCCC’s enforcement action against BlueBet is a component of a broader effort to lessen the negative effects of gambling and enhance the state’s reputation in this area.

Even while the fine is high, it is not as high as the possible penalty of AU$955,000 ($618,000), which is determined by applying 120 penalty units to each charge.

A VGCCC spokesman stated that an online complaint from a concerned member of the public sparked the investigation into BlueBet’s unlawful promotion.

Magistrate Greg Thomas cast doubt on BlueBet’s assertion that it was unaware of the violations of the law.

Despite acknowledging the company’s admission of guilt, cooperation with the VGCCC, and implementation of corrective actions, Thomas indicated his willingness to record a conviction and levy a higher sentence of AU$70,000 ($45,000).

However, factors that mitigated the situation, like the company’s quick response and commitment to stop future breaches, had an impact on the final verdict.

The episode serves as a reminder of the ongoing regulatory scrutiny that the gaming industry is subject to, as well as the importance of abiding by advertising standards and regulations to minimize the harm caused by gambling operations.
