Genting Malaysia and Berjaya Corp Deny Involvement in Proposed Casino Project Amidst Allegations

April 29, 2024 Malaysia Casino & Hotel

Following reports that they had discussions about a possible casino project in southern Malaysia, Genting Malaysia and Berjaya Corp have vehemently denied any connection and clarified their positions.

Genting Malaysia, which holds the exclusive casino license for Resorts World Genting in Malaysia, refuted any involvement, asserting that neither the company nor its CEO, Tan Sri Lim Kok Thay, Deputy Chairman, took part in any of these talks or gatherings.

The business called for an immediate stop to the dissemination of false information and emphasized that it is prepared to take further action to safeguard its stakeholders’ and its own interests.

The controversy started when a Bloomberg story claimed that Lim, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, and founder of Berjaya Corp Vincent Tan met to discuss whether to obtain a second casino license for the Forest City residential complex in Johor, which is close to Singapore.

Anwar, the prime minister, swiftly dismissed the claim as fraudulent.

Reiterating Genting Malaysia’s stance, Berjaya Corp categorically denied having any involvement in discussions on the Forest City project with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

The business denied the false allegations in media reports and clarified that Tan, the company’s founder, had not participated in any such talks.

Even if the Genting Group were to receive a license, industry watchers have projected that the development of a casino in Johor could cause problems for the company due to concerns about its proximity to Resorts World Sentosa, the group’s Singapore location.

The debate underscores the sensitivity and attention surrounding potential developments in Malaysia’s gaming sector, as both businesses strive to allay suspicions and clear the air. Stakeholders are closely monitoring the situation for updates and clarifications.
