WPT Vietnam Event Cancelled Amid Government Approval Concerns
Due to a lack of government permissions, a World Poker Tour event that was set to start today in Hanoi, Vietnam, has been abruptly canceled.
This is the third major tournament disruption in the country in the last six months.
The WPT Vietnam Passport to the World Championship 2024 will take place at Crown Poker Club. The club confirmed the cancellation on Monday on social media, claiming “technical reasons” and expressing concern for the athletes’ safety.
The club apologized and emphasized that they always prioritize tournament quality and safety. However, after local officials looked into procedural compliance, Hanoi People’s Committee Chairman Tran Sy Thanh issued the revocation order.
Concerns concerning illegal gambling were raised by claims that the series did not have the necessary licenses from the Hanoi Department of Culture.
The recommendation was to make a concerted effort to avoid engaging in “disguised gambling.”
Ten WPT World Championship packages in Las Vegas and sixty-three trophy events with approximately $2 million in guaranteed prize money were offered as part of the WPT Vietnam Passport to the World Championship.
This postponement comes after past disruptions, like as the cancelation of an Asian Poker Festival series in April and the APT Hanoi Billions on the Asian Poker Tour in December.
The unpredictability of the sector in Vietnam has been made worse by past controversies involving Crown Poker Club, including allegations of placing a fictitious “tax” on players’ gains.
