Sands China expresses optimism on recovery of base mass sector

January 25, 2024 Macau Casino & HotelIndustry Updates

Despite transportation infrastructure not yet reaching 2019 levels, Macau concessionaire Sands China expressed hope in the basic mass sector’s recovery in its most recent financial report, citing robust demand.

Base mass sales increased by 7% sequentially in the fourth quarter, according to Grant Chum, CEO and President of Sands China, maintaining a positive trend that started earlier in the year.

In Q4, base mass win was $732 million, or 97% of pre-COVID levels; premium mass win, on the other hand, increased by 101% to $685 million. Chum noted that while premium mass performed well over the time, base mass grew. Infrastructure improvements have led to an increase in the basic mass category, and Macau’s tourist patterns in Q4 returned to over 90% of 2019 levels.

Chum said that there are more alternatives for getting about and that it’s clear that people are interested in visiting Macau. Passenger numbers on Sands in Q4 Despite having a 52% sailing capacity, China’s Cotai Water Jet services have returned to 93% of their pre-COVID levels. Over 80% of Macau’s tourists came from outside the country, despite the fact that there were less than 60% of direct flights from other nations.

Sands China is attempting to secure a substantial share of the resurgent basic mass market. However, it also noted that when Phase 2 renovations at The Londoner Macao begin in the second part of the year, there probably would be some challenges.

According to Chum, the second phase of the renovations will revamp most of the hotel’s products and a few gaming levels. Chairman and CEO of Sands China Robert Goldstein was upbeat about The Londoner’s future makeover, saying disruptions in 2025 and beyond should provide particular advantages and that it will be a major asset in the market.
