NFL intensifies measures to preserve integrity amid growing influence of sports betting

In light of the growing influence of sports betting on the sport, Dean Blandino, the former vice president of officiating for the NFL from 2013 to 2017, has shared insights on the league’s heightened efforts to protect game integrity.

A well-known figure in NFL officiating, Blandino said that the league has put in place stringent measures to monitor officials, going above and beyond the penalties meted out to players who have committed gambling infractions.

On the “Awful Announcing” podcast, Blandino recently underlined the growing relevance of rigorous screening procedures for prospective and present NFL referees, given the increasing prevalence of legalized sports betting. He underlined the league’s dedication to upholding integrity, stressing the substantial resources used to thwart match-fixing and stay ahead of emerging trends.

Blandino highlighted the surveillance throughout the season, including the careful observation of officials’ bank accounts for unusual spikes in cash on game days. He emphasized that in order to investigate any potential relationship between referee decisions and their impact on betting lines, it is necessary to follow those lines.

The meticulous procedures in place, which include analyzing financial transactions, determining potential conflicts of interest, and assessing referees’ business affiliations, were highlighted by the former NFL Vice President of Officiating. Blandino highlighted incidents when referees were approached with bribes to sway games; as a result, the league implemented stringent policies, such banning officials from wearing NFL-branded clothing, to avert potentially hazardous situations.

September saw the NFL take a strong stance against gambling prohibitions, strengthening the regulation by penalizing players who wagered on their teams severely. This commitment, together with ongoing initiatives and educational programs, has led to a marked decline in high-profile events. The NFL placed three players on extended suspension in June to deter similar infractions in the future.

Blandino’s insights provide light on how the NFL will handle issues arising from its close relationship with sports betting in 2023. The league has an unrelenting dedication to rigorous gambling legislation as a consequence of its association with sportsbooks and official ties with major betting platforms. Officials like Nevada Congresswoman Dina Titus, who highlighted the NFL’s role in building fans’ faith in the fairness of the games they wager on, have praised the league for its methodical and effective approach.
