Economic Bureau Plans Multiple Trips Between Hengqin and Macau

April 12, 2024 Macau Industry Updates

The Guangdong-Macao In-depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin’s Economic Development Bureau revealed plans for a ground-breaking project on Wednesday.

The program aims to promote a novel “Macau travel, Hengqin stay” paradigm while facilitating repeated visits between Hengqin and Macau. The dynamics of regional tourism may be altered by this development.

This tactical move comes after the Guangdong Provincial Government and the Macau Special Administrative Region Government led the formalization of special customs operations in the Guangdong-Macao In-depth Cooperation Zone on March 1.

An official from the Economic Development Bureau spoke about the impending implementation plan, which aims to permit tour groups from the mainland to make multiple trips between Hengqin and Macau, during a news briefing on Wednesday.

“State ministries and commissions visited Hengqin in March to undertake on-site investigations, and they reported to the cooperation zone their initial results. The official said, “The zone is actively deliberating the proposed scheme.”

The spokeswoman emphasized the significance of aligning with the overarching strategic goal, but pointed out that the state ministry is ultimately in charge of approving and communicating the plan.

Enhancing the program would require feedback from the Macau tourism sector, which covers elements like visitor preferences and demand for hotel rooms.

Currently, only single-entry visas are available to mainland tourists to Macau, which restricts their movement within the Special Administrative Region.

However, discussions in February between China’s central government and Macau’s chief executive, Ho Iat Seng, alluded to the potential introduction of a “Macau travel, Hengqin stay” arrangement for tour groups visiting the mainland.

This is a new concept: multiple-entry permits that facilitate easy movement between Macau and Hengqin through the Hengqin control point are granted.

Executive Chairman Ho highlighted how convenient Hengqin’s many lodging options were compared to Macau’s somewhat pricey hotel rates.

Travelers will have more options with about 10,000 hotel rooms available, which will boost the thriving cross-border tourism business.

Expectations are rising for a turning point in Guangdong-Macao cooperation as talks move forward and stakeholders collaborate to complete the implementation plan.

This event is expected to transform travel habits and create new avenues for regional economic development and cross-cultural exchange.
