PH Congressman says House is equally divided regarding gaming support
Important details on the present gaming rules and regulations in the Philippines were disclosed in Asia Gaming Brief’s exclusive interview with Congressman Gus Tambunting.
Congressman Tambunting emphasized the need for a robust regulatory framework to effectively manage the gaming industry and the significance of politics in the development of gaming legislation.
He addressed the topic of privatization in the gaming sector, stating that serious talks are now underway on the potential sale of government-run casinos. In order to enhance efficiency, he urged for capable management in the private sector.
Also, he acknowledged the industry’s profitability when questioned about the growth of online gambling, particularly the move from POGOs to IGLs, but stressed the need to resolve associated social and security issues. In order to ensure effective oversight, he underlined the need for collaboration between regulators and local government institutions.
In addition, Congressman Tambunting said that despite POGOs being renamed as IGLs, the House’s opinions on gambling operators are still the same. Still, he was optimistic that as fewer licenses were granted, fewer problems would surface.
Moreover, Congressman Tambunting had a stimulating discussion on the perception of gambling as entertainment, emphasizing the role that age and purpose have in influencing people’s beliefs.
He also expressed hope that the Philippines’ gaming-friendly policies would endure into the future, pointing out ongoing initiatives to position the nation as a global gaming hub.
Lastly, regarding enforcement, Congressman Tambunting stressed the need to combine other law enforcement agencies like the Philippine National Police and local governments while simultaneously strengthening PAGCOR.
