The Star group CEO steps down

March 25, 2024 World Casino & HotelIndustry Updates

Operator of Australian casinos Robbie Cooke stepped down as the group’s managing director and CEO on Friday, Star Entertainment Group Ltd. said. The resignation took effect the same day.

As executive chair, David Foster would assume additional responsibilities while the company looked for a new CEO, according to a filing.

The corporation claims that Mr. Cooke and the board decided that, at this time, a change in leadership was beneficial for the company. It was emphasized that The Star’s chances of receiving a casino license in the state of New South Wales would decrease under Mr. Cooke’s continued chairmanship of the New South Wales Independent Casino Commission (NICC).

According to the company, Mr. Cooke will stay on as a consultant for The Star for a period of six months in order to facilitate a smooth handoff of leadership and continuity across all business operations.

The Star also revealed that Neale O’Connell will take over as the group’s interim chief financial officer after Christina Katsibouba’s resignation. Mr. Foster will get reports from Mr. O’Connell, a former CFO of Tatts Group Ltd. in Australia.

In October 2022, The Star’s main Sydney casino had its license revoked indefinitely, and it was placed under state government supervision. A second inquiry by the NICC into the company’s eligibility for a New South Wales casino license is now underway.

Furthermore, in December 2022, The Star’s licenses for its two casinos in Queensland were suspended and placed under state government supervision. Mr. Weeks’ contract, which was extended until September 30, 2024, was signed when he was appointed manager of The Star’s casino operations in Queensland.

Mr. Foster emphasized the company’s commitment to being given credit for casino licenses in Queensland and New South Wales.

In prepared remarks, Mr. Cooke said that The Star’s chances of obtaining a New South Wales casino license will be harmed by his decision to stay on as group CEO. Throughout his tenure, he maintained his confidence in the company’s path and successes.

The Star is now working with two Hong Kong-based businesses, Chow Tai Fook Enterprises Ltd and Far East Consortium International Ltd, to develop the Queen’s Wharf Brisbane project, which will be the third casino resort in Queensland. This year will mark the venue’s debut.
