Macau records over 3.29 million visitor arrivals in February

March 21, 2024 Macau Industry Updates

About 1.4 million of the little over 3.29 million tourists that visited Macau in February did so over mainland China’s eight-day Chinese New Year holiday. In February 2019, a pre-pandemic commerce year that also featured Lunar New Year festivities, this percentage represents 92.9 percent of the recorded arrivals.

February 2024 saw a 106.7 percent increase in total tourist arrivals year over year. About 1.87 million of these arrivals—or 56.7% of the total—were day visitors, with the remaining 1.43 million being overnight visitors, according to data released by Macau’s Statistics and Census Service.

This year’s Chinese New Year vacation began on February 10 instead of January 22 in 2023 and February 5 in 2019, which is crucial for Macau’s gaming and hotel sectors.

According to census data, same-day visitor trips to Macau rose by 148.9 percent year over year in February, while overnight visitor visits surged by 69.1 percent.

In February, all visitors stayed an average of 1.1 days, which was 0.2 days less than the previous year. According to the census agency, this decline was caused by a higher proportion of same-day visits during the reporting month.

Overnight visitors spent 2.2 days on average in February. The top three source markets in Greater China for these passengers were Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Mainland China.

Main Land With 2.45 million visitors, or 74.4 percent of all visits, China accounted for the majority of February’s tourist arrivals. The most significant feeder markets from mainland China were Shanghai, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Guangdong provinces.

There were 176,192 foreign visitors in February, making about 5.3% of the total. The top three countries of origin for these foreign immigrants were South Korea, the Philippines, and Indonesia.

The number of tourists visiting Macau in the first two months of this year was 6.16 million, up 105.8% over the same time the previous year. A total of 88.3% of all visitor arrivals recorded at the same time in 2019 are represented by this figure.
