IBIA releases 2023 Integrity Report, reveals global decrease in suspicious betting alerts

February 1, 2024 World iGaming & GamblingSports

The 2023 sports betting integrity report has been released by the International Betting Integrity Association (IBIA).

The data indicates that there was a 35% decline in the total number of suspicious sports betting alerts registered throughout the year, from 285 in 2022 to 184 in 2023. This decline is much less than the 244 annual warnings on average that were reported between 2019 and 2022.

These figures demonstrate the effectiveness of IBIA’s integrity monitoring programs, which now oversee an annual global wagering turnover of over $137 billion. CEO of IBIA Khalid Ali noted the positive trend and said it demonstrated how well their alarm system and monitoring work to deter members from engaging in fraudulent activities.

In order to maintain sports integrity, he emphasized the need for cooperation between the IBIA, athletic associations, and regulatory bodies. He also emphasized the ongoing threat posed by unregulated operators, particularly in Asia.

The report also discussed the creation of legal prerequisites in well-regulated markets for licensed sports betting operators to become members of a worldwide sports integrity monitoring group. Only the United Kingdom and the Czech Republic get more suspicious betting alerts than Brazil, a newcomer to this regulatory structure.

Football is still the most popular sport when it comes to alerts—63—just as it has in the past. With 54 notifications, tennis was the second most reported sport; this was a significant 49% decrease from 2022.

Ali elaborated on these trends and expressed optimism over the decline in cautions in esports, table tennis, and tennis. In order to alert athletes and authorities to the risks associated with match-fixing, he highlighted the advancements made in identifying and prosecuting the conduct.
