Macau airport expects 20% increase in passengers, flights in 2024

January 26, 2024 Macau Industry Updates

In a press statement on Wednesday, Macau International Airport Co Ltd (CAM) said that for the whole year 2024, the airport anticipates a “20 percent” increase in both passenger traffic and aircraft movements.

This anticipation is an increase above earlier projections made by Eric Fong Hio Kin, head of CAM’s marketing department, who had projected a “10 percent to 15 percent” increase in passenger traffic for the year.

The airport handled more than 42,500 aircraft movements in 2023, according to the CAM release. The specific rationale for the 2024 air traffic projection adjustment remained undisclosed; nonetheless, CAM said that it anticipates a noteworthy “40 percent” rise in business aviation movements in contrast to the 923 recorded in 2023.

Today, Macau’s airport offers regular flights to major airports in Japan, South Korea, Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore, and Indonesia, as well as commercial airline links with other cities in Taiwan and mainland China.

For the February Chinese New Year holiday, CAM has added more charter flights. These flights will go to seven locations in mainland China, three to Taipei, Taiwan, and three to Southeast Asian locations, including Bangkok, Thailand; Cam Ranh, Vietnam; and Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

In 2023, 2.13 million passengers passed through Macau International Airport; 73.8 percent of them came from mainland China. However, official Statistics and Census Service data show that these visitors made up just 7.6% of Macau’s total 28.21 million visiting tourists in 2023.
