Macau airport may experience 10 to 15% increase in passenger volume in 2024

January 11, 2024 Macau Industry Updates

According to Eric Fong Hio Kin, director of the marketing division of Macau International Airport Co Ltd (CAM), from the 5.15 million passengers who passed through the airport last year, the Macau airport may see a “10 percent to 15 percent” increase in passenger traffic for the entire year 2024.

At a ceremony hosted by Air Macau to honor the first flight to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, which both Air Macau and Air Asia now serve, Fong made these statements.

Flights to mainland China, Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore, and Indonesia are now available from Macau International Airport. According to Fong, during the next Chinese New Year holiday in February, the airport operator intends to increase flight frequency or capacity, particularly to destinations in eastern China and Southeast Asia.

The number of passengers handled by Macau International Airport in 2023 was 5.15 million, a 54% rise from the previous record-high of 9.61 million in 2019. The airport operator, CAM, declared goals to collaborate with airlines in 2024 to investigate international markets and establish more direct or linked long-haul flights.

The Statistics and Census Service reports that in the first eleven months of 2023, 1.89 million passengers arrived at the Macau airport; of them, 1.42 million (or around 74.8%) were from mainland China. Official data indicates that 1.89 million tourists arrived at Macau airport between January and November, making up 7.5% of the city’s total visitor arrivals, which came to 25.27 million.
