Macau records total of 28.2 million visitor arrivals in 2023
In 2023, there were 28,213,003 tourist visits to Macau, up 390% from 2022 and over 71% from the pre-pandemic levels recorded in 2019 (39.4 million visitors).
According to official data issued by the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC), there were 2,943,930 tourist visits in December 2023 alone—a 13.9% rise from November and a startling 660% increase over the same time in 2022.
In December, 1,962,223 mainland Chinese tourists visited a significant 480% rise from the same month the previous year. Hong Kong received 686,441 tourists, compared to 238,611 foreign visitors—a remarkable 7,220% yearly increase in visits.
December’s arrivals included 1,485,901 same-day visits and 1,458,029 overnight stays. Nevertheless, the average duration of stay decreased from 0.9 to 1.2 days.
A total of 19,049,147, or 67.5%, of the 28,213,003 arrivals for the whole fiscal year 2023 were from mainland China. 5.2% (1,459,566) of all arrivals came from outside of Hong Kong, making up 25.5% (7,195,801) of the total. In terms of foreign arrivals, the Philippines (314,161) and Korea (204,604) had the largest numbers.
The number of tourists entering Macau by land was 22,383,614, up 320% from the previous year. The number of visitors entering by sea was 3,699,014 and the number entering by air was 2,130,375.
