Malaysian authorities arrest nearly 2,000 individuals over illegal gambling, lottery
During a two-week investigation, Malaysian police apprehended 1,871 people accused of participating in illegal lottery and internet gambling operations.
The operation, which took place from September 22 to October 5 and included 1,785 raids around the nation, led to the seizure of MYR 680,000 (about USD 144,000) related to unlawful lottery operations. Additionally, MYR 513,000 worth of cash, electronics, and mobile phones that were allegedly utilized for online gambling were confiscated.
The 1,599 men and 312 women who were detained, who range in age from 20 to 60, are being investigated for participating in public lotteries and buying lottery tickets, both of which are under Malaysia’s Common Gaming Houses Act 1953. As of October 5, 382 investigative complaints on illicit lotteries and internet gambling have resulted in court charges.
In Malaysia, licensed lotteries are allowed, and Resorts World Genting, run by Genting Malaysia Bhd outside of Kuala Lumpur, is authorized to provide casino gaming services.
