August 2, 2024 Philippines Events & Announcements

As the 2024 Paris Olympics progress, several Filipino athletes remain in contention for medals, showcasing their skills on the world stage. Here’s a look at the Filipino athletes who are still vying for Olympic glory:

Carlos Yulo: Gymnastics

Carlos Yulo, the Philippines’ star gymnast, has been a standout performer in the 2024 Paris Olympics. Yulo recently entered the finals of the vault and floor exercise following a stellar performance in the qualification round. He concluded his all-around final with a 12th-place finish after getting a total score of 83.032 after six apparatuses in the first of three final events. Despite not medaling in the men’s individual all-around, Yulo is determined to secure a podium finish in his remaining events.

Boxing Contenders: Carlo Paalam, Nesthy Petecio, and Aira Villegas
In the boxing arena, three Filipino athletes are still in the running for medals:

1. Carlo Paalam: The Tokyo Olympics silver medalist continues to impress, recently defeating Jude Gallagher of Ireland with a 5-0 win. Paalam is now just one victory away from securing at least a bronze medal in the boxing competition at North Paris Arena. The Pinoy boxer will compete against Australia’s Charlie Senior in the men’s 57kg event.

2. Nesthy Petecio: Building on her silver medal win in the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, Petecio delivered a masterful 5-0 triumph over Indian opponent Jaismine Lamboria in her opening bout. Petecio now aims to advance to the quarterfinals as she faces hometown favorite Amin Zidani in a Round of 16 match.

3. Aira Villegas: In a stunning upset, Villegas defeated Algeria’s Roumaysa Boualam in the women’s 50kg division. This victory, scored unanimously by the judges, propels her into the quarterfinals. All five judges scored the bout in favor of the Filipina boxer who celebrated her 29th birthday with this win.

Other Athletes to Watch
Several other Filipino athletes are poised to compete in their respective events, with hopes of adding to the country’s medal tally:

– EJ Obiena: The pole vault star is set to compete soon and is expected to be a strong contender.
