Thai boxing celebrity exposed for using Facebook to promote gambling
“Sutthiwat,” a well-known Thai boxer, has been detained by Thai authorities for endorsing gambling websites. The Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) and the Technology Crime Suppression Division (TCSD) apprehended Sutthiwat, who has approximately 440,000 followers on Facebook, after discovering that he was advertising gambling website links for THB1,500 (around $45) per post.
The operation, led by Police Lieutenant General Jiraphob Bhuridej and Police Major General Athip Pongsiwapai, came after a thorough investigation into the 30-year-old’s online activities. Sutthiwat admitted, “I am the owner of the Facebook page and was paid by the gambling website owner to post ads in my stories.”
This act violates Section 12 of the Gambling Act of 1935, which bans unauthorized gambling advertisements. Currently, the TCSD is assembling all the proof needed to file formal charges against the boxer.
The investigation is part of a nationwide crackdown on illegal gambling promotions online. Sutthiwat confessed to the crime after TCSD officials used sophisticated forensic techniques to hunt down his involvement and bring him in for interrogation.
“We’ve been closely monitoring online activities, and our efforts paid off with this case,” said a TCSD officer, stressing the department’s commitment to tackling digital crime. According to the report published by AGB.
Authorities are sending a strong message: promoting gambling is a serious crime. This action is part of a larger effort to eliminate illegal gambling in Thailand, encouraging the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to help maintain law and order.
The investigation is ongoing, with police assuring the public of their dedication to enforcing the law and curbing illegal activities.
