Thailand’s economy expected to grow once casino legalization is approved
One of the strongest economies in Southeast Asia, Thailand, is thinking about new ways to expand its economy. After earlier conversations, the idea of legalizing casino gambling has gained momentum in recent weeks.
The idea of gambling in resort-style complexes was unanimously approved by the House of Representatives in Thailand last week. The initiative has the explicit support of the prime minister, who says it would boost employment, boost government tax revenue, and support international tourism, the nation’s most important economic sector.
All forms of gambling are now prohibited in Thailand, with the exception of horse racing and the country’s 150-year-old lottery. But neighboring countries like Cambodia and Myanmar have legalized gambling, drawing tourists from both China and Thailand, particularly in border areas.
In the Philippines, casino regulation goes back to the 1970s, while in Singapore, casino gambling has been permitted for over 20 years. Singapore has done a good job of promoting gaming as a travel destination, especially for Chinese travelers.
Since Macau is the only location where Chinese citizens may legally gamble inside their own nation, the Thai government is keen to divert visitors from Macau by offering enticing alternatives in Thailand.
