Macau sets new post-pandemic visitor arrival record during three-day Golden Week

February 14, 2024 Macau Industry Updates

On Monday, Macau established a new post-pandemic record with 217,451 people visiting the Special Administrative Region (SAR), bringing the three-day Golden Week total to more than half a million.

Over the first three days of the eight-day Chinese New Year holiday period, 502,324 tourists arrived, with an average of 167,441 visitors each day, according to statistics from the Public Security Police Force. This is an impressive 160% gain in only one year.

Every day, the number of visitors has progressively increased; on Saturday, there were 121,356; on Sunday, there were 163,427; and on Monday, there were 200,000 for the first time. With 175,030 crossings on New Year’s Eve, the post-pandemic high was reached.

The Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO) projects that the third and fourth days of Chinese New Year would be the busiest, based on historical figures. With a daily average of 120,000, their prediction of around 960,000 arrivals throughout Golden Week seems conservative.

With an average of 121,580 visitors each day, mainland China accounted for 364,742 of the total 502,234 visitor arrivals. This represents an astounding 223% increase over the first three days of the 2023 Chinese New Year break.

An additional 103,038 visitors came from Hong Kong, amounting to a daily average of 34,346 and a 45.9% increase over the previous year.

Three days’ worth of arrivals include 177,001 people at the Border Gate, 127,744 people via the HZMB checkpoint, and 75,533 people via the Hengqin Port. In addition, almost 66,000 passengers arrived by sea and 30,610 by plane.
