Nevada Gaming Control Board’s website experiences cyberattack, goes offline for several days

The website of the Nevada Gaming Control Board was compromised and has been down for many days; however, there is no proof that any financial or personal information was taken.

A source with knowledge of the matter said that the attack was directed at the public websites of the Nevada Gaming Commission and the control board, which oversees the largest industry in the state. Agendas for meetings, information on gaming, press releases, and other public records are often found on this page.

Financial information and gaming licenses, however, are kept on an unrelated internal state agency system that was not compromised by the breach. Regular operations are conducted by other state authorities.

Kirk Hendrick, the head of the Gaming Control Board, declined to comment on the occasion.

The control board confirmed on social media that they were aware of the intrusion that occurred earlier this week and that they had acted quickly to safeguard the website by taking it down. In addition to building a temporary website for information access, they plan to restore the website while collaborating with experts to assess the issue.

The Nevada Gaming Commission had its monthly meeting as scheduled and didn’t bring up the website outage during it. The broadcast of the conference was not impacted.

The entire gaming income for the state of Nevada in 2023 and December is expected to be disclosed by the control board. This information may be seen on the agency’s website.

This event follows two distinct hacks that occurred in September against Caesars Entertainment and MGM Resorts International, which caused significant financial losses and damaged both companies’ brands. These incidents proved how important cybersecurity is to the gaming industry.

The outdated information technology system of the control board needed to be updated in order to prevent any interruptions, and last June, Nevada lawmakers approved funding for this purpose.
