Future music concerts in Macau to be held at MJC race course after noise complaints

January 23, 2024 Macau Events & Announcements

According to Elsie Ao Ieong, Macau’s Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture, the government is thinking of doing music performances in the future on the racecourse owned by the Macau Jockey Club.

This is in response to the administration’s strong protests over a Korean boy band Seventeen’s concert at the homes-in-the-proximity Taipa Olympic Sports Centre.

According to Ao Ieong, an interdepartmental committee will be established by the government to evaluate the concert and look at the structure of comparable events held outside of Macau’s integrated resorts. She stressed that although holding concerts in the resorts owned by concessionaires would be the simplest solution, it would prevent small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) from making money.

The Minister said, “The government will study the possibility of organizing concerts in locations that are either close to or far from residential areas, and if the racecourse and the Macau East Asian Games Dome have the conditions, they would also be considered for organizing concerts.”

Due to mounting debt, the Macau Jockey Club will cease all horse racing activities on April 1st. The Macau government has also announced that horse racing will not be revived in the future. The government will reclaim the site that now houses the racetrack, and although no plans for its future use have been made public, it has said that more gaming establishments are not feasible.

Around 40,000 people are said to have attended Seventeen’s concerts in Macau over the weekend, which led to the temporary rerouting of traffic and the closing of one light rail station in the area.
