World Poker Tour actively looking to bring tournament poker back to Macau

January 10, 2024 World Events & Announcements

The World Poker Tour (WPT) is actively working to bring tournament poker back to Macau, according to CEO Adam Pliska.

During the WPT World Championship, Pliska gave an exclusive interview to Inside Asian Gaming from the Wynn Las Vegas. He reaffirmed his plan to return to Macau and investigate opportunities to create a major event series. Several Macau casinos reopened their poker rooms when border restrictions were lifted; however, since the PokerStars Live room at City of Dreams shuttered in early 2018, tournament poker has been suspended.

Pliska brought out structural obstacles, like as table limits and dealer resource allocation, that make big-time poker tournaments in Macau difficult. Notwithstanding these challenges, Pliska underlined the WPT’s commitment to collaborating with the authorities and interested parties to provide a fantastic event in Macau. Previous tournaments, like as the Macau Millions in April 2018, drew substantial crowds, suggesting that poker has promise in the area.

As part of its Asian growth, the WPT has tournaments scheduled for 2023 in Taiwan, Cambodia, India, and Australia. The WPT will make its first major stop in Cambodia at NagaWorld later this month.

Pliska emphasized how poker is becoming more and more popular in Asia by highlighting the use of technology, poker education, and poker growth in the area. He praised the potential and scalability of Asia, highlighting the favorable reaction from a populace that enjoys gaming.

The whole interview will appear in the February issue of Inside Asian Gaming, a monthly journal.
