Carlos Yulo says he lost cash incentives worth “six digits” because of his mother

August 7, 2024 Philippines Events & AnnouncementsSports

Carlos Yulo captured the world’s attention by earning two gold medals at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Team Philippines won its first-ever Olympic gold medal in gymnastics after Carlos did a spectacular performance during the men’s floor exercise final on August 3, 2024. A day later, Carlos won another gold medal during the men’s artistic gymnastics individual vault finals at the Bercy Arena in France.

Carlos’s stunning achievements at the 33rd Summer Olympics has catapulted him into the limelight, not only for his athletic brilliance but also for the personal challenges that have unfolded alongside his triumphs.

Just days after his gold medal wins, Carlos addressed a brewing feud within his family as he shed light on a rift between his mother, Angelica Yulo, and his girlfriend Chloe San Jose.

In his TikTok video released on August 6, Carlos revealed that his mother had managed his finances, including funds from various competitions and allowances. He expressed dismay upon discovering discrepancies in the management of his bank accounts. Carlos admitted that he was unaware of the full extent of these transactions until he took over the account himself.

Carlos disclosed that the cash incentives were worth “six digits” since he won two medals in the World Championships in November 2022 in the UK.

The 24-year-old gymnast, who earned one silver and one bronze in the said tournament, recalled that the “six-digit” incentive went into his bank account that was being handled by his mother. Carlos said he didn’t know the incentive was already given by the organization until he asked about it when he flew back to the Philippines by December 2022.

Carlos emphasized that he was not that concerned about the cash incentive but he was bothered by the fact that his mother had been withdrawing from his account without informing him. He also revealed that he had the bank statements showing the withdrawals she made.

Angelica Yulo explained in earlier interviews that her actions were a precautionary measure to secure her son’s financial future. She described her handling of the funds as a means of safeguarding against potential financial uncertainty.

CARLOS DEFENDS HIS GIRLFRIEND.

The situation was further complicated by familial tensions involving Carlos’ girlfriend, Chloe San Jose.

Angelica Yulo believed that Carlos’ girlfriend Chloe is the “root” of her issues with her son. The matriarch criticized Chloe’s lifestyle and background, stemming from cultural differences between the Philippines and Australia where San Jose was raised.

At ayun yung nakagisnan niyang culture,” Carlos pointed out.

Carlos also defended Chloe by saying that as a Filipino-Australian living in Melbourne, she is able to support herself financially.

Despite these personal struggles, the double gold medalist maintained a message of reconciliation and forgiveness. In a heartfelt plea, he urged for healing and an end to the discord.

Angelica Yulo tearfully reads her statement regarding her son, double gold Olympic champion Carlos Yulo. She asked for his forgiveness but she insisted that they will talk about things such as money matters privately as a family.
