Sands China Celebrates 20 Years: Pioneering Macau’s Tourism Boom

May 20, 2024 Macau Casino & HotelEvents & Announcements

Sands Macao, the company’s first Macau property, marked its 20th anniversary this week, which was observed by Sands China.

The extravagant event showcased Sands China’s $15 billion commitment to the area, which will turn Macau into a global leader in leisure and tourism.

When Sands Macao debuted in May 2004, it shattered all previous records as the first casino owned by a foreign entity in Macau.

Its extraordinary performance—which includes paying for its construction costs in just nine months—provided the impetus for the industry’s explosive growth.

With performances by London West End artist Kayleigh Stephenson and local singer German Ku, along with impressive pyrotechnics, Thursday’s celebration was reminiscent of the 2004 launch.

“Macau’s golden tourism era began with the overwhelming public support at Sands Macao’s grand opening,” said Dr. Wilfred Wong, Executive Vice Chairman of Sands China.

He continued, “Macau’s strong development and our company’s long-term expansion were made possible by Sands Macao’s success. The Venetian Macao, The Plaza Macao, The Parisian Macao, and The Londoner Macao, which together make up The Cotai Strip, an integrated resort city, are the result of our introduction of the popular Las Vegas integrated resort model. This historic journey realized our late founder Mr. Sheldon G. Adelson’s lofty ambitions and changed the Cotai skyline.”

Dr. Wong underlined, “Sands Macao stands at the very beginning.” “Since 2004, Sands China’s five properties have hosted over 950 million visitors, and our total investment in Macau exceeds $15 billion.” These successes show how committed we are to seeing Macau grow into a major international destination for travel and recreation.”
