NAIA to increase aircraft movements

February 28, 2024 Philippines Industry Updates

The current 41 aircraft movements per hour at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) will be increased to 48 by the Philippine government.

Recently, the Hong Kong authorities and the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP), which oversees 44 more commercial airports, have begun talks to find out how to do this.

In order to increase aircraft movements, CAAP is looking for collaboration and has sent air traffic controllers to Hong Kong International Airport to educate them on best practices. Prioritizing aircraft movements while accounting for infrastructure constraints, previous CAAP developments tripled the annual passenger capacity from 32 million to 60 million.

According to data released by the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) in 2023, there were 279,953 aircraft movements, up 3% from pre-Covid levels in 2019. Due to the early lifting of internal travel restrictions, domestic flights surged by 12%.

A total of 171,605 domestic flights and 108,348 international flights were conducted in 2023. In order to accommodate the growing number of passengers—which is expected to surpass 45.38 million in 2023—MIAA expects further upgrades in structures, machinery, infrastructure, runways, and terminals.

These actions are part of a bigger plan to improve aircraft operations and meet NAIA’s growing demand.
