Macau AL to conduct first reading of draft gambling crime law
The first reading of the draft “Law to Combat Gambling Crimes” by Macau’s Legislative Assembly (AL) is scheduled for February 28th, as per the latest meeting schedule.
The goal of this proposed legislation is to update Macau’s illegal gambling regime, Law No. 8/96/M, which was passed almost thirty years ago.
The government’s proposed law would increase the maximum sentence to be served in jail as well as the length of time that “preventive detention” can be used for crimes related to gambling, such as under-the-table betting using the “multiplier.”
In addition, a provision of the legislation forbids the “operation, promotion, and organizing” of “online games of fortune and mutual betting,” regardless of whether the computer networks that underpin these kinds of gambling enterprises have their main office in Macau or not.
