Former Indian cricketer cries foul over deepfake video of him “endorsing” app

February 1, 2024 India Crime & Legal

While Indian authorities continue to look into the matter, former Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar has cautioned his fans not to download an app that is featured in a deepfake video that seems to be him.

Tendulkar, who came onto the video earlier this month, alerted his followers to the fraud and urged them to denounce the fake video on X, the former name for Twitter. He emphasized the significance of fighting technology misuse and the urgency with which social media businesses must respond to these issues in order to prevent the spread of incorrect information and misinformation.

Even though Tendulkar had endorsement deals with many companies, he said that the video in question, in which he was shown endorsing a gambling program, was entirely fake. The edited video featured the 50-year-old former cricket player endorsing the app and talking about his daughter’s purported improvements from using it to play games.

Authorities are actively looking into the video’s origins, especially the Mumbai police. There are now efforts underway to identify and apprehend those responsible for the creation and dissemination of the deepfake video. They traced the uploader’s IP address to the Philippines and found a Hotmail account associated with the offender.
