The Star Sydney appoints AML expert as new CEO

January 26, 2024 World Casino & Hotel

Specializing in anti-money laundering (AML) activities, Janelle Campbell has recently been appointed CEO of The Star Sydney casino resort in New South Wales, Australia. She is a seasoned casino executive with ten years of experience in the Macau industry.

The Star Entertainment Group Ltd. sent a statement to the Australian Securities Exchange on Thursday stating that her nomination is contingent upon regulatory approval. Ms. Campbell worked at Macau’s Melco Resorts & Entertainment Ltd. as senior vice president of finance from 2008 until 2018. Among the many responsibilities she had throughout her job were those related to finance, supply chain, and AML.

The group CEO and managing director of the Star, Robbie Cooke, will be Ms. Campbell’s boss. Mr. Cooke wanted to work with Ms. Campbell on The Star Sydney’s ongoing refurbishment project to bring the Sydney casino back to a respectable level.

A renowned leader with extensive experience overseeing large-scale operations, Ms. Campbell emphasized her commitment to strategic objectives and the need for remedial actions to restore appropriateness and remove the current license suspension. As she developed a culture of high-performance excellence, she underlined the need to foster trust and confidence in stakeholders, visitors, team members, regulators, and the community.

Following an AUD100 million (US$65.8 million) punishment levied by state authorities, The Star Sydney’s casino license was revoked on October 21, 2022, with an indefinite suspension and subsequent state-government takeover.

In her almost two decades of expertise in the casino industry, Ms. Campbell has held leadership roles in finance for Conrad Jupiters and Treasury Casinos Queensland, as well as director of finance and financial controller for Conrad Treasury in Brisbane, Queensland. A well-known Australian hotel company employed her as a senior executive as well.
