Macau’s five-star hotel occupancy rate reaches 91.2% in December 2023
Following the easing of travel restrictions relating to COVID-19 for Macau, mainland China, and Hong Kong, the five-star hotel occupancy rate in Macau increased to 91.2% in December from 73.9% in January, according to the Government Tourism Office of Macao.
The five-star hotel occupancy rate in December 2023 was still somewhat below the pre-pandemic level of 93.8% in December 2019, even with the rise.
Though not all five-star hotels in Macau are associated with gaming firms, the bulk of the city’s casinos are located within resorts that also include luxury hotels.
Macau has 27,800 operational five-star rooms as of November, which is a 23.0% increase from 22,600 in January. There are 24,600 five-star hotels in Macau as of December 2019.
In December 2023, the average nightly rate for five-star rooms was MOP1,773.2 (US$220.19), which is a 29.3% increase over the MOP1,371.3 average in January 2023.
The occupancy rate of five-star hotels for the whole year 2023 was 85.8%, with an average nightly charge of MOP1,509.9. Five-star hotel rates in December 2019 averaged MOP1,610.8 per night, with 92.3% occupancy year-round.
December 2023 occupancy in the four-star hotel category (which includes certain locations within casino hotels) was 86.5%, up from 70.1% in January.
In November, there were 9,100 four-star rooms available, a 19.7% increase from 7,600 in January.
December 2023 saw a 23.9% rise in the average overnight rate for four-star hotels from MOP806.5 in January to MOP998.9.
With 6,800 rooms available as of December 2019, the occupancy rate for four-star hotels was 75.3%.
In 2023, the occupancy rate of four-star hotels was 80.7%, with an average room rate of MOP955.7 for the whole year.
