Five arrested in India after raid in illegal gambling den

January 5, 2024 India Crime & LegaliGaming & Gambling

Five people who are allegedly involved in illegal gambling activities were arrested during a massive raid in Port Blair, the capital city of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands in India.

The operation was overseen by senior superintendent Rajeev Ranjan of the Indian Police Service (IPS), however, the raid was executed by the Deputy Superintendent of Police (CID). Dollygunj Basti is where the arrested individuals were found, and the operation brought in around RS 15,260 ($184) in “stake money.”

The arrests were carried out in compliance with Section 5/7 of the Andaman and Nicobar Gambling Regulation 1951, a law established to tackle crimes linked to gambling inside the country. We do not yet know what the penalties are for those who participate in the illegal gaming den.

This operation makes it very evident that law enforcement is committed to stopping illegal gambling and sends a strong message to those who engage in such behavior: they will be looked into and punished. In addition, the police emphasized how vigilant they would be in stopping such crimes and asked the public to use anonymous hotlines to report any illegal gambling or other criminal activity.

India recently prohibited 22 betting apps and websites in November as part of an effort to stop illegal online gaming. This initiative aimed to restrict access to illegal gambling websites and applications by blocking orders issued by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. Furthermore, India said in October that it plans to increase the gambling tax on internet gambling to 28%, which might have an impact on the industry.
