Microsoft reportedly considering introduction of ad-supported plan for Xbox Cloud Gaming
Microsoft is reportedly considering launching an ad-supported Xbox Cloud Gaming plan.
Xbox Cloud Gaming is the company’s game streaming service. According to a hypothetical scenario presented by Xbox CFO Tim Stuart, users in Southeast Asia, India, and Africa would be eligible for free access to Xbox Cloud Gaming in exchange for watching platform advertisements. This potential approach aims to target areas where the percentage of individuals with cell phones and console ownership is minimal.
Stuart floated the idea at the Wells Fargo TMT Summit, hinting that an ad-supported model would be a workable way to increase Xbox Cloud Gaming accessibility in areas where consoles aren’t the primary gaming device. In exchange for a certain amount of game streaming time, users could be willing to watch a short advertisement. This tactic would be particularly attractive in areas where the cost of consoles is a deterrent but smartphone usage is commonplace.
Though it’s still only an idea, Microsoft has experimented with offering free game streaming for some titles, including Fortnite. If introduced, ad-supported Xbox Cloud Gaming plans might increase the service’s attractiveness and user base, especially in areas where traditional game consoles are less common.
