Minors illegally gambling, consuming alcohol in casinos in NSW to face stricter penalties

In an attempt to strengthen compliance processes, minors caught engaging in illegal gambling and consuming alcohol in casinos or associated hospitality businesses in New South Wales (NSW), Australia, may now face severe fines.

Liquor & Gaming NSW, the state’s gaming regulator, intends to carry out a widespread crackdown this Christmas season, sending out regulatory inspectors and casino security.

According to NSW legislation, it is strictly forbidden for anybody under the age of 18 to enter casinos or provide false identification or other forms of fraudulent evidence of age. Additionally, it is against the law for minors to try to purchase, buy, or consume alcohol on casino premises. Penalties for minors breaking these regulations may now total up to AU$2,200 (US$1,600) per infraction.

According to Jane Lin, Executive Director of Regulatory Operations at Liquor & Gaming NSW, minors found in breach of these rules may be prohibited from accessing a casino for a period of time that exceeds their eighteenth birthday. This suggests they won’t be able to go till they become 19 years old. Minors will be punished, with any winnings from gambling taken, and may even be expelled.

Lin said that operators of casinos have received reminders about their responsibility to prevent minors from gambling on their property. Operators of casinos that disregard these regulations risk severe enforcement actions. Notably, more oversight will be conducted in New South Wales, home to The Star Sydney and Crown Sydney, two sizable casinos, to provide a responsible and safe gaming environment over the holiday season.
