Macau’s airport served 4 million passengers, marks 50% recovery from pre-pandemic total

December 1, 2023 Macau Industry Updates

A total of 4.04 million travelers used Macau’s airport between January and October, which is slightly more than half of the amount that was there prior to the pandemic in 2019.

The year 2019 had almost 8 million visitors to Macau, just before the COVID-19 pandemic. The region’s aviation sector is showing positive trends as traffic is gradually increasing, according to the most current figures from the Civil Aviation Authority (AACM).

During a plenary session on Wednesday, Pun Wa Kin, the president of AACM, shared this information with the assembly. He said that Macau Airport can already accommodate 10 million people annually and expressed confidence in the ability of the current infrastructure to meet demand, especially with an anticipated rise in foreign tourists in the next year.

Raimundo do Rosário, Secretary of Transport and Public Works, offered further perspectives at the same session. He said that in the second half of 2024, work on Macau International Airport will start. This project is a component of a phased plan to upgrade the airport’s facilities, which also includes more space for parking planes and a higher capacity for passengers overall.

These upgrades demonstrate Macau’s commitment to facilitating more frequent and effective air travel as the area gets ready for a tourism boom. By continuing to adapt to the evolving aviation industry, Macau aims to solidify its position as a significant hub in the Asia-Pacific area.
