IOC considering of adding Olympic Esports Games

October 18, 2023 World iGaming & Gambling

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) is thinking of adding Olympic Esports Games as a way to embrace the esports movement.

Thomas Bach, the president of the IOC, acknowledged this great development during the 141st IOC Session in Mumbai, India.

According to Bach, there are almost three billion gamers and esports participants worldwide. Esports has grown astronomically in popularity. In addition, esports are thought to be of great interest to 500 million people, most of whom are under 34 and specialize in sports simulations and virtual sports.

Specifics are yet unknown, but the IOC’s declaration emphasizes its aim to learn more about esports. Which esports games will be part of the Olympic Esports Games category is still up in the air. Well-known titles like League of Legends, PUBG, Dota 2, CS:GO, and Dota 2 can be included, providing esports fans worldwide with more betting choices.

The IOC has also ventured into the esports industry before. When it hosted an Esports Forum in Lausanne in 2018, the IOC started looking at esports. The Olympic Virtual Series was the IOC’s first major foray into esports, having debuted in 2021. Then, in June, there was the Olympic Esports Week, when 130 participants competed in several esports games, such as racing and virtual sports. It did not, however, include well-known games like CS:GO or Dota 2.

In spite of this, the Olympic Esports Series had over 6 million views on many digital platforms, with over 75% of viewers being in the 13–34 age range, indicating a high level of interest among younger people. This evolution represents the increasing convergence of esports with the Olympics, drawing in a fresh and vibrant worldwide audience.
