PAGCOR awaits decision on election ban

September 20, 2023 Philippines Crime & LegalEvents & Announcements

The Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp. (PAGCOR) is now waiting for the Commission on Elections (Comelec) to decide on its request to be exempted from the limits on spending for the next local government authority elections.

Reports say that PAGCOR’s legal department made an official request two weeks ago to be excused from the spending ban that would stay in place until the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE) in October.

The Barangay Sangguniang Kabataan Election (BSKE) is in charge of choosing the barangay captain, who is the most important leader in the barangay, as well as seven out of the eight members of the Sangguniang Barangay, which is the barangay council. All 42,027 barangays in the country take part in this voting process.

Vice President for Corporate Social Responsibility Stephen R. Villaflor has expressed concerns about the effects of the ban, pointing out that it will make it harder for PAGCOR to help communities that are going through hard times. Villaflor made it clear that PAGCOR helps families and communities that are directly affected by natural disasters like typhoons, volcanic events, floods, and fires, among other things. This help comes in the form of both disaster aid goods and cash.

The Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) gave a total of P28.37 million, which is equal to $500,085, to buy food and other goods in the last fiscal year. Then, these supplies were given to almost 53,000 homes in areas that had been hit by natural disasters.

Also, the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) has said it wants to start four important corporate social responsibility projects in the last quarter of the current fiscal year, with a focus on education and health.
