Netherlands implements new preventive measures on gaming addiction

The Netherlands is implementing proactive initiatives to enhance addiction prevention strategies within its gaming sector. The Minister for Legal Protection, Franc Weerwind, has recently announced a proposal to implement additional laws aimed at addressing deficiencies within the current system. These measures are implemented in response to the concerns expressed by the Dutch regulatory authority over discrepancies in monitoring and protection protocols.

The Kansspelautoriteit (KSA), the regulatory body overseeing gambling activities in the Netherlands, conducted an evaluation of player protection measures used by online licensees. The assessment revealed that the lack of uniform monitoring practices presented notable hazards to players. Minister Weerwind understands the need of implementing stricter restrictions in order to safeguard consumer well-being.

The next year will see the submission of proposed regulation modifications for comment, primarily emphasizing the protection of players who are considered vulnerable. The assessment of the Remote Gambling Act in 2024 will include an evaluation of the efficacy of current addiction prevention measures, therefore enabling the possibility of making revisions.

The Minister’s suggestions have garnered support from members of the Senate factions D66 and the Party for the Animals (PvdD). These factions endorse the idea of collaborating with the KSA and groups like as Jellinek, an addiction advisory body, in order to establish a holistic strategy that ensures fairness among all parties involved.

The Dutch government’s initiatives aimed at improving addiction prevention will place emphasis on prioritizing vulnerable populations, with a special focus on young people. According to recent statistics, it has been observed that a significant proportion of persons, namely 23%, who have enrolled in Cruks, the self-exclusion program in the Netherlands, are under the age bracket of under 25 years.
