MGM China unaffected by US cyberattack
The owner of two hotels in Macau, MGM China Holdings Ltd, has declared that the recent cybersecurity problem that resulted in the shutdown of several computer systems at MGM Resorts International facilities in the United States has had no impact on its operations in Macau.
The MGM Macau casino hotel and the MGM Cotai resort are both managed by MGM China, which has stressed that it was unaffected by the event since it maintains its own autonomous IT infrastructure.
The computer systems of MGM Resorts sites in the United States were impacted by the hack, which started on Sunday. Online check-ins, credit card transactions, getting cash from ATMs, and using key cards to enter hotel rooms were all noted to be problematic by customers. Additionally, claims of broken gambling machines and unavailable corporate websites were made.
In a statement, MGM Resorts recognized the cybersecurity issue but did not refer to it as a cyberattack. They alerted law authorities, started an investigation with the aid of outside cybersecurity experts, and took precautions to safeguard their systems and data, including the shutdown of certain systems. The event is under investigation by the FBI.
MGM Resorts has described the probe as “ongoing” and is putting up a lot of effort to find a solution. They have not, however, provided information on the number of impacted homes or a damage estimate due to the system failure.
In the last five years, MGM Resorts has revealed two cybersecurity incidents, with over 10 million user details stolen in 2019.
