Some unspoken casino etiquettes you should know and follow

September 2, 2022 World iGaming & Gambling

As the saying goes, when in Rome, do as the Romans do.

In life, some rules can be understood without being spoken outright. People have this shared understanding and common concept of what is right and wrong, acceptable and unacceptable, and appropriate and inappropriate. And you are new to the world of gambling, these basic etiquettes are some of the things you should never forget.

No one will tell you these things straight to your face, but these unspoken and unwritten rules are important. So if you don’t want to get kicked out of the premises or cause a commotion, here are five important unspoken rules to remember.

Respect personal space

Having your personal space invaded can be annoying and uncomfortable in any setting, and the same goes when you are in a casino. It doesn’t have to be blurted out in words, but it can be extremely rude and irksome if you would monitor another player’s game by standing behind them and peering over their shoulder. Avoid being a bystander who would observe other player’s every move and then interrupt them with inquiries or idle chatter. However, if you really do want to watch a live table game, you can do so but make an effort to ensure that everyone has sufficient room to play their game and feel comfortable while gambling.

Smoke responsibly

Casinos have varying policies when it comes to smoking and vaping. Some allow them indoors, but others do not. If you have the privilege of smoking inside, keep in mind that everyone has different tolerance levels for secondhand smoking. It is proper casino etiquette to inquire if the smoke from your cigarette or vape would bother other players. On the contrary, if the casino you go to is a non-smoking place, just follow the rules. There is surely a designated space for you to smoke in that casino so just go there instead.

Be kind to casino employees

It goes without saying that you should be courteous to the dealers, servers, and other staff members. Not only is being disrespectful or aggressive towards the employees will get you kicked out of the facility, but it is the basic principle of human decency. This means refraining from the use of foul language, playing by the rules, and maintaining an appropriate level of decorum in all interactions. Remember that when you lose, it’s perfectly okay to be disappointed, but never lash out at the dealers because it’s not their fault. Lastly, part of treating them properly is giving them enough tips after playing the games.

Stay away from other people’s chips and cards

Here’s the thing: if you are in a casino, keep your hands to yourself. You probably don’t need someone to remind you that it’s quite disrespectful to mess with someone else’s game by touching their chips or cards. Would you grab a grocery item if it’s already in someone else’s cart? Those chips and cards are considered their belonging during a game. Not only is it rude, but it can be distracting to the point that they could lose the game if you do so. On the other hand, if someone does this to you, don’t be shy to call the attention of the dealer and raise your concern.

Cash in your chips

You should cash in your chips before leaving the table so that other players are not deprived of their chance to win. it’s also smarter to take what you can get and leave the table than to stay and risk losing everything. If you’re ever on the fence about quitting a game, just cash in your chips. Also, don’t try to steal the chance to win from someone else; instead, just take what you can and leave.
