Why Online Cricket Betting Should be Regulated in India

September 7, 2021 iGaming & Gambling

Online sports betting, including cricket betting, is still illegal in India, yet it’s a known fact that cricket betting still takes place, espeically during the IPL. There are plenty of betting sites for cricket which allow Indian players to bet on cricket, but within the country, all forms of sports betting other than horse racing are prohibited. Underground cricket betting is in fact a huge market but since it’s unregulated, fraud and irresponsible gambling are also very prevalent. Considering the popularity of cricket betting, many feel it’s time to regulate online cricket betting in India. This article will discuss why cricket betting should be legal in India and the pros and cons associated with such a decision.

The Current Gambling Scene in India

The gambling industry in India has been operating under some of the most outdated gambling laws in the world so far. This is the Public Gaming Act of 1877 which is the only source of reference that operators and players in India can refer to, with the exception of an amendment in 1996. In short, the Public Gaming Act states the following:

Operating a casino registered in India is prohibited
Visiting a gamblign house is illegal
Any form of betting or gambling-related activity is also prohibited
Betting on games of skill is legal
