Three Policies Related to the Gaming Industry in Three Regions

April 21, 2021 iGaming & Gambling

Before the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the gaming industry in Asia was booming, and many countries had opened casinos. However, they all adopt a “national segregation” policy.

Cambodia:
Cambodia is one of the countries with the largest number of casinos in the world, most of which are concentrated on the border between Vietnam and Thailand. However, according to Cambodian local laws, it is illegal for Cambodians to gamble in casinos. Their gaming revenue mainly comes from foreign tourists from Vietnam, China and Laos.

Vietnam:
The number of legally-operated casinos in Vietnam is only about six. Originally, Vietnam prohibited locals from entering the casinos, but the local government tried to relax the restrictions and open the casinos on Phu Quoc Island to locals, but the conditions were limited. Must be at least 21 years old; provide proof of high income; stay in the casino for more than twenty-four hours requires an “entrance fee”.

Singapore:
Singapore has different restrictions on citizens and tourists. It is free for foreigners to enter the casino. To enter the casino, local residents must pay a “entry fee” of 100 Singapore dollars to exclude low-income gamblers. Those who apply for bankruptcy, unemployment, or long-term government assistance are also not allowed to enter.
