New Australian guidelines for video games with gambling content

Starting on September 22, 2024, the Australian Government will implement new classification guidelines for video games that feature gambling-like content.

These changes address increasing public concerns about the potential connection between gambling mechanics in video games and problem gambling, especially among children and young adults.

According to a report by Gambling Insider, Under the new guidelines, video games that include paid loot boxes or in-game purchases involving elements of chance will receive a minimum classification of M (Mature). This rating advises that the game is not recommended for players under 15, though there are no legal restrictions on its sale.

Games that simulate gambling, such as casino or slot machine simulators, will be given an R 18+ rating, legally restricting their sale to individuals 18 years or older, in line with Australia’s gambling laws.

The revised guidelines will be applicable to games played on PCs, gaming consoles, mobile devices, and tablets.

The games that will be most impacted by these adjustments are those that have loot boxes that can be purchased, random rewards that can be earned with real money or in-game, and social casino games or titles with interactive gambling elements.

However, games that feature chance-based mechanics without involving real currency or those with casino settings but no interactive gambling are unlikely to be impacted.

Previously classified games will not be reclassified unless they are modified or unclassified.

These changes come as Australia sees rising gambling losses, which recently reached AU$32 billion (US$21.69 billion), prompting calls for reform from advocates across the country.
